Some afternoons are made for slowing down with a needle and thread. This little duo pairs two of our most-loved beginner kits, so you can try two very different textile crafts without leaving your chair — a learn-as-you-go embroidery hoop on one hand, a soft folk felt make on the other. Both are gentle enough for a first-timer, and lovely enough to keep.
Start with Jessica Long's Spiral Sampler, worked on deep navy fabric that makes every colour sing. Rather than practising stitches on scrap cloth, you learn them right on your sampler while a calm, encouraging video tutorial guides you — 14 essential stitches and 16 variations by the time you reach the middle of the spiral. You finish with a real piece to frame and the confidence to start your next project.
Then meet Corinne Lapierre's Folk Hedgehog, a pocket-sized felt make from her studio in Britain. You'll stitch the wool-mix felt pieces together, add cheerful folk-art embroidery, then softly stuff your little hedgehog and finish it with a hanging loop. At around 12 cm tall, he's happy on a shelf, a seasonal branch, or a cosy corner — and quick enough to finish in an evening.
