About this piece

A hare, a full moon, and the oldest good omen in the book.

The moon gazing hare is an old symbol of growth, rebirth and new beginnings — which is a lovely thing to have on the wall, and a lovely thing to be making in the first place. Sammy's version sits upright in profile, drawn in paisley curls of gold and cream, with a single white moon above it on midnight navy cotton.

It is one of Paraffle's beginner kits: ten stitches in total, each one photographed in the stitch guide, with the pattern already printed so there is nothing to trace. The gold thread catches the light as the piece fills in, and the moon is the last satisfying thing you stitch.

The finished hare stays in its 8 inch hoop, ready to hang.

About the artist

Paraffle, Edinburgh, Scotland

Founded in Edinburgh, 20174.9★ from 1,300+ Etsy reviews

Paraffle began in Edinburgh in 2017, when Sammy Bishop started drawing animals the way paisley shawls are drawn — in teardrops, curls and tiny florets. The name is the Scots word for embroidery. Everything is still designed by Sammy and packed by hand by a small team near the Royal Mile: organic cotton, DMC threads, plastic-free kraft packaging, and a stitch guide that photographs every stitch and links to a video of it. Her Highland coos, puffins and Edinburgh street scenes are the most Scottish things in the shop, and among the kindest to a first-timer.
