About this piece
A puffin, drawn in paisley, on a hoop the size of a saucer.
Puffins are all beak and eyebrow, and the paisley treatment suits them — Sammy's bird is outlined in white and black with a bright orange beak, set against a deep sea blue that does the work of sky and water at once. It is the 6 inch version of Paraffle's Scottish puffin, so it is a finishable project rather than a commitment.
Five classic stitches, and that is the lot. The pattern arrives printed on adhesive Solvy paper — stick it to the fabric and stitch straight over the lines, no tracing needed. Each stitch is photographed in the guide, with a QR code through to a short video if you would rather watch someone do it first.
The finished puffin stays in its 6 inch hoop, ready to hang.

About the artist
Paraffle, Edinburgh, Scotland
Paraffle began in Edinburgh in 2017, when Sammy Bishop started drawing animals the way paisley shawls are drawn — in teardrops, curls and tiny florets. The name is the Scots word for embroidery. Everything is still designed by Sammy and packed by hand by a small team near the Royal Mile: organic cotton, DMC threads, plastic-free kraft packaging, and a stitch guide that photographs every stitch and links to a video of it. Her Highland coos, puffins and Edinburgh street scenes are the most Scottish things in the shop, and among the kindest to a first-timer.
