About this piece
The bees are busy. You don't have to be.
Sammy asked Paraffle's customers which animal they wanted to stitch next and the bee won outright. You can see why: the wings are drawn in fine black outline with little star motifs, the body fills with gold paisley and dense black detail, and the whole thing sits large and calm in the centre of pale organic cotton.
Ten classic stitches are used across the design, each one photographed step by step in the stitch guide, and the pattern comes pre-printed so there is nothing to trace. The wings go quickly; the body is the part to settle into with a pot of tea.

About the artist
Paraffle, Edinburgh, Scotland
Paraffle began in Edinburgh in 2017, when Sammy Bishop started drawing animals the way paisley shawls are drawn — in teardrops, curls and tiny florets. The name is the Scots word for embroidery. Everything is still designed by Sammy and packed by hand by a small team near the Royal Mile: organic cotton, DMC threads, plastic-free kraft packaging, and a stitch guide that photographs every stitch and links to a video of it. Her Highland coos, puffins and Edinburgh street scenes are the most Scottish things in the shop, and among the kindest to a first-timer.
