Sammy's blue whale is built entirely out of paisley — teardrops, curls and little florets fill the body, then fan out along the belly in neat rows of cream. Worked on deep navy organic cotton it reads almost like scrimshaw, and it sits just as happily above a bath or in a hallway as it does in a craft room.

It makes a proper first project. The design uses ten classic embroidery stitches, so rather than repeating one stitch for hours you come away with a small vocabulary — and the printed stitch guide photographs every one of them. The pattern arrives already printed, so there is no tracing and no guessing. Thread the needle and follow the line.
