About this piece
The prettiest lane in Edinburgh, in a hoop the size of a saucer.
Circus Lane is the cobbled mews behind Stockbridge that half of Edinburgh has photographed — low stone cottages, a church spire at the end, and greenery spilling over every doorway. Sammy has drawn the architecture in fine gold outline on charcoal and then let the planting do the talking: dense mounds of green worked in knots and loops, with tiny flecks of red and orange for the flowers in the window boxes.
That contrast is what makes it such a good second or third project. The buildings are steady line work, and the foliage is the part you build up slowly until it stands proud of the fabric. It is not difficult so much as absorbing — Paraffle rate it for stitchers with a little experience, or beginners who are ready to try something more involved.
The pattern comes printed on adhesive Solvy paper, so there is no tracing, and the stitch guide carries a QR code to a video for every stitch used. The finished lane stays in its 6 inch hoop.

About the artist
Paraffle, Edinburgh, Scotland
Paraffle began in Edinburgh in 2017, when Sammy Bishop started drawing animals the way paisley shawls are drawn — in teardrops, curls and tiny florets. The name is the Scots word for embroidery. Everything is still designed by Sammy and packed by hand by a small team near the Royal Mile: organic cotton, DMC threads, plastic-free kraft packaging, and a stitch guide that photographs every stitch and links to a video of it. Her Highland coos, puffins and Edinburgh street scenes are the most Scottish things in the shop, and among the kindest to a first-timer.
